Obama Signs Health Care Reform Bill Into Law

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590). The legislation, with the amendments passed by the Senate, was passed by the House of Representatives on Sunday. An analysis of the new law, including provisions with potential impact on health clubs and businesses in available online at IHRSA.org/Affordable-Care-Act.

House approves Health Care Reform legislation

The U.S. House of Representatives voted to approve the health care reform legislation that was previously passed by the U.S. Senate in late December. The bill is now awaiting the signature of President Barack Obama. A reconciliation bill was also passed that makes changes to the Senate bill. The reconciliation bill is now awaiting a vote in the Senate.

The work of the task force will complement the efforts of first lady Michelle Obama as she leads a national public awareness effort to tackle the issue. Through the first lady's Let's Move initiative, she will encourage involvement from the public, nonprofit, and private sectors, as well as families to help support and amplify the work of the federal government in improving the health of the nation's children.

Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Chairman Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) recently announced his intentions to develop a bipartisan bill aimed at curbing childhood obesity. Harkin held a hearing with Surgeon General Regina Benjamin at which lawmakers agreed on the need for action.

First Lady Meets with Lawmakers on Childhood Obesity Initiative

First Lady Michelle Obama met with three cabinet secretaries and six members of Congress who play key roles in health care legislation to discuss her initiative to curb childhood obesity. According to a report in the Washington Post, “the meeting signaled the first lady's intent to be involved not just in talking about the problem, but in crafting specific solutions.”
