Every day, all over the world, health clubs (aka gyms, fitness centers, studios, sports centers, etc) and their staff are inspiring people to live healthier, more active lives.

As the trade association representing the Global Fitness Industry, IHRSA is the recognized leader in research for and about the industry. IHRSA tracks and reports on club performance and consumer behavior trends, provides comprehensive, country-specific industry overviews for key markets, and publishes a detailed annual view of the overall global fitness industry.

  • There were 36,180 U.S. Health Clubs (as listed in the Yellow Pages on January 1, 2016; includes YMCAs, community centers, studios, etc.), up 4.8% over 2015.
  • 55.3 million Americans belonged to at least one of the 36,180 health clubs nationwide.
  • In 2015, total U.S. Industry Revenues increased 6.1% to $25.8 billion.
  • More than 64 million Americans utilized a club in 2015.
  • Total health club/gym/studio visits surpassed 5 billion.
  • Average Rate of Member Retention for IHRSA Clubs: 72.4%
  • Global Outlook: Industry revenues worldwide totaled $81 billion in revenue as more than 187,000 clubs served some 151 million members in 2015.
