Zumba among worksite health programs for Latino farm workers

Dr. Marc SchenkerFarm workers in California, many of whom are Latino, may harvest healthy food for the nation, but it doesn’t mean they, themselves, are eating it - or getting enough exercise.

In fact, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in this group is 78% in the U.S. - notably higher than that of the general population; and their rate of diabetes is almost twice that of non-Latino whites.

So now, a five-year, $3-million study evaluating worksite-based health programs designed to lower the risk of obesity and diabetes among immigrant Latino farm workers will offer Zumba routines, as well as healthier food choices.
