IHRSA 2014 Health Promotion & Wellness Track: Exercise as Medicine

It seems so simple and obvious. Why, then, has it not caught on?

The idea is having physicians talking more about physical fitness in the doctor’s office, and for those who need it, prescribing exercise. 

The hope is to cut down on the amount of pills a patient takes, get them to the gym to improve their health and prevent other health issues from occurring, while cutting down on health care costs in the United States.

This is the premise of the educational session by Edward Phillips, M.D., Exercise as Medicine: Tapping the Medical Community. The Health Promotion & Wellness track discussion is Thursday, March 13, 1:30 p.m., during IHRSA 2014 33rd Annual International Convention & Trade Show.

IHRSA 2014 Membership Sales Track: get to know the client

In most cases, the sales staff of a health club does not carry the ugly stigma of how most people view sales people – greasy, money-grabbers who don’t care about the person they are supposedly helping. Of course sales departments in the health and fitness industry want to feed their family, but it is more important to match clients with appropriate programs and membership options that best suits them.

Elias Scarr, membership director at Results Fitness and a sales consultant, will be leading Upgrading, Upselling and Cross-Selling: Steps to Increasing Membership Sales, on Thursday, March 13, at IHRSA 2014 33rd Annual Convention & Trade Show. During the session, in the Membership Sales track, Scarr will help with the latter – getting the best for the client. His tactic is to have a set, systemized strategy in place that allows you to take time with the clients to really get to know them, their needs and wants, and, ultimately, what they really need.

IHRSA 2014 Fitness & Personal Training Track: 5 R's of Success

There are many educational sessions on personal training – it is one of the hottest trends in the fitness industry after all. Finding the one, or a couple, that best suits what you are looking to get out of your department or business is paramount.

Paul Stugart is a first-time presenter at the IHRSA Annual International Convention & Trade Show and feels his session will be a little different than others. He expects The 5 R’s of Successful Personal Training, in the Fitness & Personal Training track on Wednesday, March 12, 9:45 a.m., will delve a little deeper into the steps needed to what it takes to have an effective, and profitable, personal training department.

“I want to help (attendees) get something out of (my session). It will be more in-depth than what others try to cover in an hour and 30 minutes,” said Stugart, who in no way was trying to put down other speakers and their talks. “”Hopefully they will walk out with information to stimulate their thought process on what doing now and reassess to make changes or assimilate new changes.”

Plenty to do and see at IHRSA 2014

There will be plenty time for networking at IHRSA 2014.OK, quick, what is your favorite part of the IHRSA International Convention & Trade Show? 

I know, there is so much to choose from it is nearly impossible to answer that question quickly, or with only one thing.

Really, at the very least, you need to separate the event - this year running March 12-15 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, Calif. - into different categories. There are educational sessions, general session speakers, the two-day trade show, roundtables, networking events, exercise classes and even special events. Then, maybe it might be possible to pick a favorite from each category.

Wow, are you tired just thinking about how much you need to see and do in only four days? Don’t worry, you still have four weeks to scour the schedule, reach out to old colleagues as well as new ones you want to meet, and formulate each one of your days.

To help you out, here are a handful of the event highlights that are always attendee favorites. Read on to make sure you don't miss anything.


IHRSA 2014 HR track: your most important asset

Theresa Amaya, regional director of Human Resources for Highgate Hotels, will lend her 15 years of experience when she facilitates, “HR Basics: Developing & Investing in Your Most Valuable Asset,” on Friday, March 14, 1:30 p.m.

This IHRSA 2014 33rd Annual International Convention & Trade Show session is in the roundtable format in the Human Resources educational session track. Amaya feels the style is great for the subject because there is a wide range of issues that can arise at any company.

IHRSA 2014 Marketing track: social media facts and fallacies

Every club manager or owner knows there has to be a social media component for the facility to be successful in the years to come.

Social media -Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest, to name some of the most popular sites - as well as a blog can bring in more memberships, provide free marketing, show the city your involvement in the community, and allow you to connect with your members as well as your members connect with each other.

But, according to Justin Tamsett, most of those who are responsible for social media at their club are not using it correctly.

Tamsett, who was among the first in the industry to utilize social medial with success, will lead “Social Media: Facts and Fallacies for Your Business,” in the Marketing track of the educational sessions at IHRSA 2014 33rd Annual International Convention & Trade Show. The format is a tutorial group, which will include a lot of questions and answers.

IHRSA is covering a different session in each track leading up to IHRSA 2014, which runs March 12-15 at the San Diego Convention Center.

IHRSA 2014 Leadership track: find your Q factor

The Leadership track during the educational sessions during the IHRSA International Convention & Trade Show gives numerous tips and ideas on how to be a great trailblazer and manager in your company.

But sometimes leaders need to take a step back and figure out who they are, where they have been and where they want to go first – in business and personal life - before imparting their knowledge and experiences, and the nuances of leadership, on others.

Jennifer Graffice, an industry veteran of almost 20 years, who has held a variety of positions, will be leading a Leadership track session, “Women in Fitness: Finding the Q Factor in Business and Life,” on Wednesday, March 12, at 3:45 p.m.

IHRSA Institute is back in 2014

IHRSA Institute classroomIHRSA offers a plenty of resources and events for anyone in the fitness industry. No matter what level you are at and what department you work in, there is a webinar, publication, education session at a convention, and research for everyone.

But for those looking to get to the next level in the fitness industry, there is the IHRSA Institute.

The Institute, on hiatus for four years, is back. It is scheduled for Aug. 5-8 at the Kenan-Flagler Business School on the University of North Carolina campus.

Purchase education session DVDs from IHRSA 2013 

There is really no reason not to purchase a few DVDs from the 2013 IHRSA International Convention & Trade Show. Unless of course, you and your staff were able to get to every educational session and parlay the knowledge to each other. 

Since no one was likely able to do that, now is your chance to get one, two, hey, why not 10, DVDs.

And even if yoou were able to get to everything, the best way to let the rest of your staff who wasn't in Las Vegas really get the message of the presentation is for them to watch the video.
