Tweet of the Day: Join The Movement To Make The World More Active #WhyGetActive

As an industry, we have set a goal for ourselves to be recognized as a primary solution to the global physical inactivity epidemic. #WhyGetActive is a social media movement born at the grassroots level to combat that crisis. The purpose of the campaign is to:

  • Provide a worldwide platform for sharing the many compelling reasons people choose to be physically active
  • Foster cultural support for wellness and physical activity—wherein physically active lifestyles are encouraged, supported, and ultimately made easier to sustain
  • Provide a vehicle for increased engagement and a platform for discussion among health clubs and physical activity advocates, policy makers, fitness enthusiasts, and anyone interested in physical activity promotion

We hope that with regular engagement and promotion, #WhyGetActive can become a location for discussions around the importance and benefits of regular physical activity, with a focus on solutions health clubs provide, a vehicle for clubs to engage their members and build a sense of strong community in their clubs, and a tool for clubs to reach out to their surrounding communities to educate the public and recruit potential members.

#WhyGetActive is a tool to be used to engage your community and strategic partners around this important topic. You can join the movement by:

  • Sharing your own reason(s) for pursuing an active, healthy lifestyle
  • Using the hashtag to share your own physical activity habits
  • Adding the hashtag to Twitter, Facebook, or other social media posts when sharing a relevant article or research study from your personal account or the club account
  • Using the club account to share your members’ stories of why they pursue an active, healthy lifestyle
  • Encouraging trainers to take #WhyGetActive photos with each client, and share them from their own accounts, to be re-shared by the club account.

Tweet of The Day: Exercise Is Medicine

Health clubs are a safe and effective environment for people to pursue a healthier life. Over the past year, more and more focus in the medical community has been placed on physical activity as a vital sign, and physicians are increasingly willing to write prescriptions for exercise. We believe IHRSA clubs are the ideal place to fill those prescriptions.

Tweet of the Day: Social Media Is Good For You and Your Members

The business benefits of social media are oft discussed and well documented. But it looks like using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest among others may also be beneficial to your members. A recent study found that weight loss interventions using social media as a componenet produced modest but significant declines in body mass index (BMI).

A club's social media account (or accounts) can be help members as they work towards healthier lives - by congratulating them on milestones and motivating them to get into the gym - as well as help position the club as a resource in the community. May Is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month - And We're Celebrating With Great, Tweetable Content

Every May for the last decade, IHRSA has celebrated National Physical Fitness and Sports Month by providing tools for clubs to promote themsevles in their communities. Between 2004 - 2013, the Get Active America! program ran during May, and last year IHRSA kicked off the #WhyGetActive white board campaign, asking clubs, inddustry professionals, and consumers to share their reason for pursuing an active, healthy life, and post it on social media. We reached 1 million people by the end of last June.

What Is #WhyGetActive?

#WhyGetActive is a social media movement born at the grassroots level to reign in the physical inactivity crisis that feeds chronic diseases, drives health care spending, and escalates economic uncertainty in the United States and worldwide. If you haven't heard of #WhyGetActive before or want a refresher, check out our blog post introducing the movement on the Department of Health and Human Services "Be Active Your Way" Blog or read about the White Board Campaign on ihrsa.org

This year, IHRSA is again celebrating by brining you resources - great, tweetable content. Every day for the month of May (yes, all 31 days), IHRSA will blog an interesting statistic, graphic or video you can take and share on social media. Retweet it as is, add your own commentary, download the image and add your own touch to it - whatever works for your business. We will also include reminders of great IHRSA resources designed to help your club run successful health promotion programs or initiatives.
