Happy National Public Health Week, US Clubs!

This week, the US based American Public Health Association (APHA) is celebrating National Public Health Week (NPHW). According to their website, National Public Health Week is, "a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving our nation".

One of the great issues facing our nation today is physical inactivity. Physical inactivity is a leading cause of death, contributing to approximately 1 in 10 deaths worldwide. Yet less than half of American adults and less than a quarter of American youth get the recommended levels of activity on a regular basis.

Health clubs, however, provide a solution. And while many clubs may not always feel like they are doing "public health work", most in fact are. A few ways clubs engage in public health work include:

  • Providing a safe space for adults and children to spend active time
  • Helping people improve their health through exercise and education
  • Creating a supportive, group environment to fuel health improvement
  • Providing access for a variety of people to one of the best medications on the market (that would be exercise)
  • Providing accessible resources on heath and wellness to your community

So on behalf of IHRSA, Happy National Public Health Week!
