Passionate Industry Attendees at IDEA Convention

Award winners, from left, Douglas Brooks, Krista Popowych and Carla SottoviThe 2014 IDEA World Fitness Convention, with the theme “Fuel Your Passion,” attracted nearly 12,000 club owners and managers, personal trainers, group fitness instructors, and mind-body professionals to the Ana- heim Convention Center, in Anaheim, California, in August.

The attendees, representing more than 60 different countries, attended an eclectic assortment of educational sessions; sampled the latest programs, equipment, and products on exhibit in the Expo Hall; and cheered the winners of the IDEA Jack LaLanne Award and the IDEA World Fitness Awards.

  • The 2014 IDEA Jack LaLanne Award honored long- distance swimmer Diana Nyad, who, at the age of 64, completed the 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida. Nyad is also an author and prominent sportscaster, and has been inducted into the Women’s Sports Hall of Fame.
  • Douglas Brooks, an exercise physiologist, former Ironman triathlete, and the director of global programming for BOSU and RealRyder Indoor Cycling, was named the 2014 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year.
  • Carla Sottovia, director of fitness and personal training education at the Cooper Fitness Center in Dallas, was named the 2014 IDEA Program Director of the Year.
  • Krista Popowych, an education director and a master trainer for Keiser and JumpSport Fitness, was honored as the 2014 IDEA Fitness Instructor of the Year. Popowych also hosted the Canadian fitness television show, The Caribbean Workout, seen by 35 million viewers.
