Concerns for health push Sudanese women to get in shape

A billboard for weight loss in Sudan.Health club memberships and usage is up all around the world, even countries where gyms are historically scarce.

Sudan, a country where woman were considered more desirable the larger they were, now see its female-only clubs with full classes and more members than ever before.

“Most women that come say they don’t want to be fat so they don’t get diseases,” said Amal Ahmed, a trainer at a club in Riyadh. “They are afraid of arthritis and back pain. They all want to be slim.”
