Ideas taken back from IHRSA conventions

One of the main reasons so many people attend the IHRSA International Convention & Trade Show is to better their club or business when they return home.

In today's Best Practices we hear about what some attendees have implemented from a session they attended.

Q: What idea have you implemented after learning about it at an IHRSA event?

A: We learned new approaches to closing sales. One is “pay the value of the day”. With this promotion, the joining fee corresponds with the day of the month. If a prospect takes a tour and establishes that Anytime Fitness is the gym for them, we tell them the sooner they join, the cheaper it is. If they come in on the 2nd, its $2 to join, but if they leave it until the 30th, its $30. If they wait until the following month, the standard fee applies. It usually works to get people to join immediately.

I attended the outstanding pre-convention session “The Vision and Future for Medical Wellness/Global Wellness & Anti-Aging Medicine” by Christopher Breuleux, Ph.D., president of The Medical Wellness Association. This session taught me that it’s not just about living longer; it is about quality of life. It’s not only about preventive medicine and disease treatment, it’s about education. We need to learn to age successfully. These concepts led me in the direction of our new “Health and Wellness Lecture Series.”  The program is in collaboration with local medical providers offering interactive educational lectures to our community on successful healthy aging concepts. It has been a huge success!

A: This past year we focused on developing a more cohesive, professional and productive staff.  A program we implemented that we learned about at the IHRSA convention is our “Weekly Readings”.  Everyone on the team suggests a book, article or study to read ranging in topics from business development (ie. Good to Great) to an article from The New England Journal of Medicine.  We discuss each suggestion and vote on our assignment. Then, at our weekly staff meeting, we discuss what we read. This builds the knowledge base of our staff and promotes a team atmosphere. Some great discussions have come from these readings.
