The COVID Era Fitness Consumer: For 2020 Stress, Exercise May Be the Antidote discusses how American health club members are using exercise to manage the stress and anxiety tied to the events in 2020. The report also includes stressors by gender and generational group, along with a printable one-page infographic.

Some of the key findings in the report include:

  • 76% of health club members feel anxious about their health;
  • 68% of those who canceled their membership due to the pandemic feel more stressed now than they did at the start of the year versus 61% of current members;
  • Parents have added anxiety about their children’s well-being; and
  • 65% of fitness consumers are using exercise to cope with stress.

The COVID Era Fitness Consumer is based on a survey of 1,171 people aged 18+ in the United States who currently have a gym membership, or recently canceled their gym membership due to COVID-19. The survey was conducted online during the period of August 24-28, 2020, and has a margin of error of +/- 2.9%.

“'The COVID Era Fitness Consumer' speaks to the vital role health clubs play in helping members manage stress and mental wellness. Approximately two-thirds of gym-goers indicate that they’ve used exercise to manage stress in 2020. Those who have returned to their fitness centers are less likely to report feeling more stressed now than they did at the start of the year.”
