BOSTON—October 29, 2018—Today, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) released its annual Industry Data Survey (IDS) results and the accompanying publication, IHRSA Profiles of Success. The report provides a detailed analysis of the annual performance of leading health and fitness clubs, including results in key metrics such as revenue, membership growth and retention, traffic, payroll, non-dues revenue, and EBITDA. Club reinvestment and profit center analysis as well as income statements and balance sheet data are also provided.

"IHRSA's annual Industry Data Survey results show that leading club operators have continued to grow revenue and membership numbers at healthy rates,” said Jay Ablondi, IHRSA's executive vice president of global products. “Clubs posted strong financial and membership indicators, with varying results by club type and size. According to the latest survey, clubs part of a chain generated greater revenue growth than independent clubs, while independent clubs recorded stronger membership retention in comparison with multi-site facilities.”

A total of 115 club companies representing 12,289 locations participated in the IDS. Overall, clubs posted net membership growth of 2.8% from 2016 to 2017 and revenue growth of 5.3% over the same time. Clubs part of a chain reported greater revenue growth (+7%) than independent clubs (+2.8%). On the other hand, independent facilities posted a retention rate of 72.4%, while clubs part of a chain indicated a retention rate of 66.7%.
