May 21, 2013 – Boston, MA – Today, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) released The 2013 IHRSA Global Report: The State of the Health Club Industry. An annual IHRSA bestseller, the report provides the most up-to-date, comprehensive overview of the global health club industry. In 2012, the health club industry generated an estimated $75.7 billion in revenue from more than 153,000 clubs serving 131.7 million members worldwide, according to the report.
"The global health club industry continues to expand, thanks to strong growth in Latin America, Germany, and China, coupled with solid performance in the U.S. - which is home to more health clubs than any other single country," said Jay Ablondi, IHRSA's executive vice president of global products. "Worldwide, consumers are demonstrating an increased demand for health club services and club operators are responding with conveniently located facilities and a wide range of amenities."
More than 46,000 health clubs in 15 Latin American markets generate roughly $5.5 billion in revenue. Among global markets, Brazil is second in size only to the U.S. An estimated 7 million members belong to more than 23,000 health clubs in Brazil. Mexico generates an estimated $1.5 billion in revenue from 2.7 million members frequenting nearly 8,000 health clubs.
The health club industry also shows potential in a struggling European market as well as a growing Asia-Pacific region. In Europe, Germany posted notable growth last year. The number of clubs increased by 262 units, from 7,304 in 2011 to 7,566 in 2012. Memberships rose from 7.6 million to 7.9 million. In the Asia-Pacific, China attracted nearly 3.5 million members to more than 2,600 health clubs. Hong Kong, alone, has approximately 600 clubs.
"In addition to posting strong performance in China, the Asia-Pacific is home to key leading club operators," said Melissa Rodriguez, IHRSA’s senior research manager. "Central Sports, Renaissance, and Konami Sports & Life, all in Japan, often rank among the top 25 club companies worldwide in terms of revenue, club count, and number of memberships."
The 2013 IHRSA Global Report contains a comprehensive overview of global health club markets in North America, South America, Europe, the Asia-Pacific and Africa. Insight from leading club companies, suppliers, and associations is also included in the report.
"One of the unique aspects of The IHRSA Global Report is the profile information it provides on more than 350 IHRSA club and associate member companies," said Ablondi. "As a convenient year-round resource, it is easy to understand why The IHRSA Global Report is consistently our best-selling item and the most requested publication by industry stakeholders, investors and the media."
The report is divided into four sections:
- The "Industry Overview" section details the industry's performance in 2012 along with analysis and insights from industry experts and leading club operators.
- The "Industry Research" section includes data on revenue, number of facilities and number of club members, and highlights the top ten global markets in these categories.
