IHRSA Releases the 2010 Global Report: The State of the Health Club Industry

The Industry Demonstrates Its Ability to Adapt to a Changing Global Marketplace

Boston – June 07, 2010 – The International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) released today the 2010 IHRSA Global Report: the State of the Health Club Industry. The report contains a detailed synopsis of the of the global health club industry, including the latest financial statistics and industry trends for the top global markets with analysis from independent clubs, large club chains, leading industry suppliers, club associations, and federations.

The health club industry posted a solid performance in 2009. Industry revenue reached $67.2 billion from a global count of 128,500 health clubs and 119.5 million members. With over 42 million members, the market in Europe, alone, totaled an estimated $31 billion in revenue. In North America, 53.1 million members used 38,000 facilities. The Asia-Pacific region has remained steady with over $10 billion generated in revenues and nearly 16 million members.

“In 2009, the health club industry demonstrated its strength, even while facing a challenging international economy,” said Jay Ablondi, executive vice president of global products at IHRSA. “Successful club companies wisely managed expenses, while consumers worldwide attended their health clubs with increased frequency. There is no doubt that consumers continue to value the many benefits of exercise, including among other things, stress relief. With strong leadership and a firm understanding of consumer needs, global markets should anticipate industry growth in 2010. “

The Global Report is divided into four sections:

  • The “Industry Overview” details the industry’s performance in 2009 along with expert analysis and insights from industry experts and leading club operators.
  • The “Industry Research” section of the report includes information on industry revenue numbers, club totals, and membership numbers for the entire fitness industry, and highlights the top ten global markets in those categories. For the U.S. market there is a breakdown of data for the number of health clubs by state and club consumer participation by activity.
  • The “Company Profiles” section highlights more than 200 leading health club companies from around the world.
  • The “Supplier Profiles” section of the report includes fitness equipment manufacturers and industry supplier profiles, which provide club operators with information about innovative products, services, and software to help them run their clubs more profitably.
