John McCarthy Merit Scholarship

John McCarthy was IHRSA’s first Executive Director, a position he held for 25 years until retiring in 2006. John was always looking for a better way to do things - whether at IHRSA or for the industry as a whole. The Institute was very important to John. He saw the program as a way to grow the best and brightest in the industry. With that in mind, when it came time to pay tribute to John, it seemed that a scholarship to the Institute was best way to honor him.

The scholarship has a value of $2,850 and includes a full registration to the IHRSA Institute, program materials and handouts, social and networking events, lodging, and meals, as well as a $500 travel stipend. Qualified candidates should be able to demonstrate their passion for, and absolute commitment to, the health club industry's future, as well as provide evidence of their service, sales, and leadership skills. Download the Application today, as submissions are due by June 5, 2015, for consideration for this year's Institute program.

Networking Opportunities

Learning often occurs beyond the classroom. The Institute offers countless opportunities to share ideas with attendees, faculty, sponsors, and the IHRSA staff. The event starts with a fun opening session that will allow you to learn from and about your fellow attendees. Meals, roundtables, and social activities throughout the event are structured to facilitate the exchange of best practices and build relationships that last long after the Institute ends.

Attendee Profile Book

Get further insight about your fellow attendees, faculty, sponsors and the IHRSA staff. Photos, contact information, and personal and company profiles are some of the features in this program guide. This is a great resource as you meet new friends onsite and for continuing relationships for years to come.

Logo Swap

Which is better . . . to give or to receive?
Now you can do both! We encourage all Institute attendees to bring items printed with their club's logo, such as hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, water bottles or other distinctive items, to swap with fellow attendees. This is a fun networking experience and a great way to show off the uniqueness of your club's logo.

Publications & Resources

IHRSA research and planning publications valued at more than $800 will be included in your registration fee and will be used in such classes as:

  • Financial Management
  • Industry Trends, Research & Benchmarking
  • Health Promotion & Community Service
  • Personal & Group Training Management

Institute participants will learn how to make the best use of these essential management tools both for daily operations and long-term planning.
