Guru Pasternak picks IHRSA 2014 trade show faves

Helix Lateral TrainerHarley Pasternak, a celebrity trainer, nutrition expert, and best-selling author, knows a good thing when he sees it.

“The IHRSA trade show, held in San Diego, was definitely the place to be if you’re searching for all of the latest and greatest fitness gadgets, exercise equipment, and any fat-burning machine you can think of,” he wrote in a recent blog. “I’ve been attending the show for nearly 20 years, and remember when fitness innovations like the elliptical, arc trainer, and spin cycles were first introduced.”

Pasternak then went on to identify and describe four products that were among his personal favorites - ones that he’s considering purchasing for his own studio.

Read on to see what four products - out of thousands - he picked out from the 2014 IHRSA Annual Internatonal Convention & Trade Show.

Obese and overweight are not 'thriving' in their lives

Image courtesy of jesadaphorn/FreeDigitalPhotos.netWe often boast about the variety of offerings in This Week in the Fitness Industry. We need to take back all of the times we patted ourselves on the back for what we thought were accomplishments

How about this for variety:

  • lower social well-being may result in obesity
  • which states have the highest percentage meeting physical activity guidelines?
  • what to look for in fitness app
  • private equity firms gobbling up health clubs and chains

Check out This Week in the Fitness Industry for all of these stories.

State pages provide news, alerts and laws

IHRSA's mission is to grow, protect and promote the health and fitness industry, and to provide its members with benefits that will help them be more successful.

The three areas – promote, protect and grow – are equally important to us here. While it may seem most of the bells and whistles are put into the growing (convention, trade show) and promoting (publications, research, website) baskets, the third leg may be overlooked by our members.

That would be a big mistake.

Regulars to the Advocacy pages on or those who make sure they are in attendance when Public Policy staff are presenting at our events are well aware of the importance of that arm of IHRSA.

Read on to see how the State pages on should be checked out on a weekly basis.

Past attendees rave about IHRSA Institute

Suffice to say that Lisa Gorsline got something out of the IHRSA Institute.

The president and general manager at Corpus Christi Athletic Club in Texas not only attended the last event in 2009 - one year after her inaugural Institute – but she was the first person to register for this year’s event.

“I didn’t know what to expect in 2008 but from my very first day I was really happy (I decided to go) and was excited to be there,” she said. “My experience was a lot better than I expected it to be. The education sessions, as well as the team (building), inspired me and helped me boost morale (back at Corpus Christi). It took me to the next level and helped me learn new management skills. To be able to bring that back to the club was phenomenal.”

The IHRSA Institute, which is Aug. 5-8 at Kenan-Flagler Business School on the campus of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, is back after a five-year hiatus. The all-inclusive event features graduate-level education with top-notch educators – many of whom are Institute graduates - in small classroom settings. Over the four days there are many networking, team building and social events that give attendees plenty of time to commiserate with classmates and educators alike.

Help make your personal training department profitable

A good personal training department is more than ample trainers, having many clients, and making a profit.

While those areas are critical to success – both the club’s and clients’ – there is much more that makes a strong department.

Sherri McMillan, owner of Northwest Personal Training in Vancouver, Wash., will discuss both the obvious and “oh, I didn’t think of that” areas that contributed to successful personal training when she leads the next IHRSA webinar, “Managing a Highly Profitable Personal Training Department,” on Thursday, July 17, 2 to 3 p.m. (EDT).

Read on to see what McMillan will cover during the next IHRSA webinar.
