New way to sell memberships

When it comes to health clubs, what’s one of the most important, indeed critical, aspects of the operation?

The answer is: membership sales.

The most important aspect of the business, of course, is member service, but the sale comes first - you can’t serve a client until you have one.

That’s why, during IHRSA’s 33rd Annual International Convention and Trade Show in San Diego, no less than eight sessions were devoted to the topic. That’s also why, this month, CBI turns to the participants in one panel discussion, “Generating Leads and Positioning Your Sales Team for Success,” for their best thoughts on the subject.

The four - moderator Chuck Hall, Jason Reinhardt, Amanda Konigsberg, and Shawn Stewart - emphasize the importance of well-defined sales systems, the need to monitor key performance indicators, the critical role of referrals, the use of strategically sophisticated promotions, the seminal impact of social media, the centrality of community involvement, and the need to remain alert to changes in the greater membership sales environment.

Innovate in order to advance in your organization, the industry

The final keynote of the 2014 IHRSA Institute was Prof. Christopher Bingham’s Entrepreneurship Session on innovation. He stressed the importance of innovation in the health and fitness industry as a way to succeed and not become passé.

Areas covered in “Capturing New Opportunities for Growth and Profitability” included why innovation is so important and how innovation can add new members, help make fitness a lifestyle, keep staff motivated, and how to deal with competition by using innovation.

Innovation can be simplified in four areas of what he called the Congruence Model – structure, culture, people and tasks – and when done correctly they work together and off the other.

Read on for Bingham's breakdown of his Congruence Model and innovation.

Attendees have hard time describing impact of IHRSA Institute

IHRSA Institute attendees got a lot out of the education sessions.IHRSA can write stories, blow up social media and get countless testimonials, but until you attend an event you can’t comprehend the breadth of the learning, networking and commiserating.

This may not be any more true than during the IHRSA Institute - part because there is nothing like it anywhere in the industry, but also because it’s been five years since it was last offered.

The IHRSA Institute was held last week, Aug. 5-8,  at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Kenan-Flagler Business School.

“It was fan-tastic,” said Missy Moss, who paused for effect. “I am having a hard time finding the one word that can describe the entire week.”

What motivates your employees?

Motivation is no stranger in the health and fitness industry. It is used in many different ways on the gym floor and during classes in order to get clients to achieve goals and make changes to live a healthier lifestyle.

But what about motivation in order to get your staff to work harder? Essentially what managers are hoping for is no different that what clients hope to achieve - hit goals and live a healthier work lifestyle (which, really, is be more effective).

The IHRSA Institute’s first Leadership Session, by University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School Professor Alison Fragale, looked at how managers can use motivation to get better production out of their teams.

Read on for more on motivation of your staff.
