Seven out of 10 Americans age 16 and older said they have never been a member of a health club, and 1 in 5 categorized themselves as former members, according to the IHRSA Trend Report: Second Quarter 2012.
These numbers, from the quarter ending June 30, 2012, show the majority of the U.S. is prime targets for club owners to get through their doors.
The Trend Report, made available to IHRSA members this week, shows non-members citing cost as the top barrier to joining health clubs. However, nearly 20% said they would feel out of place as a reason for not joining. The IHRSA Trend Report suggests low-cost ways to attract non-members and engage them soon after starting membership.
