Preparation, certification can save lives at your club

In his little more than a decade at Desoto Athletic Clubs in Southaven, Miss., David Creech has seen two members die while working out. Neither could have been avoided as an aneurysm in the brain and heart attack were the causes.

Recently another member was working lat pull-downs when he fell down and his heart stopped beating. He lived, thankfully.

The reason the survivor was able to make his way back to the club, at a much later date, was the fact that an AED – automated external defibrillator – was on site.

Don't take safety in the club lightly

With so many people coming and going out of a health club every day, it is imperative for possible dangers to be nipped in the bud.

A procedure many clubs employ in order to keep injury reports to a minimum is “sweeps” of the area. Usually this consists of a staff member walking through the club checking for problematic areas. This can include frayed wires, sharp edges, pulled-up carpet, loose pieces on equipment, among others.

No amount of time used by an employee to find possible trouble spots is considered wasted. There are enough instances where injuries or health situations are out of the hands of the clubs. When a cut or slip can be avoided and doesn’t have to be logged on an injury report then it is a good thing.
