Go deeper into being successful in personal training

There are many educational sessions on personal training – it is one of the hottest trends in the fitness industry after all. Finding the one, or a couple, that best suits what you are looking to get out of your department or business is paramount.

Paul Stugart is a first-time presenter at the IHRSA Annual International Convention & Trade Show and feels his session will be a little different than others. He expects The 5 R’s of Successful Personal Training, in the Fitness & Personal Training track on Wednesday, March 12, 9:45 a.m., will delve a little deeper into the steps needed to what it takes to have an effective, and profitable, personal training department.

“I want to help (attendees) get something out of (my session). It will be more in-depth than what others try to cover in an hour and 30 minutes,” said Stugart, who in no way was trying to put down other speakers and their talks. “”Hopefully they will walk out with information to stimulate their thought process on what doing now and reassess to make changes or assimilate new changes.”

Read on to see what Stugart intends to discuss.

Profiles of Success: revenue, membership on upswing

There is a lot of good news to take out of the 2013 IHRSA Profiles of Success, The Annual Industry Data Survey of the Health and Fitness Industry, which was published today.

The encouraging numbers were in the overall category of revenue and membership. Responding clubs to the Industry Data Survey, which is used for the report, saw revenue grow by 4% and membership up 3%.

"Although performance varied across club segments, overall, IHRSA's annual IDS indicates that leading clubs have continued to report improved results," said Jay Ablondi, IHRSA's executive vice president of Global Products. "The clubs profiled in this sample rely on an experienced management team operating in a conservative manner and responding quickly to member needs. This, in turn, creates a well-managed club and satisfied members.”

The 2013 IHRSA Profiles of Success provides detailed information about health and fitness club benchmarks and other aspects of club performance, including membership growth and traffic, facility reinvestment, financial statement data, and more. The report also contains an overview of the U.S. health club industry as well as a snapshot of member demographics. This year's report also includes a profit center section that analyzes revenue and profit margins from racquet sports, spas, pro shop/retail, food & beverage, and children’s/youth programs.

As a business, it is imperative the product gets a foothold in your market and the name of both the product and company is in the minds of consumers. And, of course, doing what it takes in order to make a profit tops the list.

To do any of these sometimes knowing what your peers and competition is doing can make or break a company. To that end, IHRSA has developed many publications, surveys and other research data in order to assist the fitness and sports club community in growing and serving the consumer.

This week IHRSA released 2012 IHRSA Profiles of Success a comprehensive report featuring a detailed analysis of performances from the top health and fitness clubs. Included in Profiles are key metrics like revenue and membership growth, payroll, member retention, non-dues revenue and EBITDA.
