It is all business at Onterie Fitness Center

Some clubs are about attaining as many members as possible. Others strive to be a vital cog in its community with events and fundraisers. And others look to work with other businesses in the area to form a strong partnership.

Onterie Fitness Center, which is located two blocks from Navy Pier in Chicago, definitely falls into the third option, while, of course, it hopes to be successful in the first two.

Located in a residential and commercial hi-rise and a busy business district in a large city, it seeks out other businesses for corporate membership. It also has space to lease out and exercise, pool and studio areas to rent, in addition to the its existing clients

On-site gyms can pose threat to membership

In the late 1990s and early 2000s it was not uncommon to see a company shower its employees with perks.

Both start-ups and ones entrenched in its sector, like EMC outside of Boston, Google and Facebook in Silicon Valley, and AOL in Northern Virginia, often had pool tables and foosball games at the office, as well fitness centers down the hall for a nice convenience at work.

Then the financial downturn of the mid-2000s saw some of the costlier extras fall by the wayside – whether it was gyms not in new construction’s blueprints, or a company couldn’t afford to support the superfluous.

Now, according to American Fitness, a supplier of home and commercial fitness equipment, there is an uptick in reinvesting in on-site gyms.
