Get a better handle on demographics and participation with latest IHRSA publication

It’s a secret every club wants to discover - how to keep members longer.

According to the new IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report: 2014 Health Club Activity, Usage, Trends and Analysis, members who have been coming for at least 10 years, on average, will visit the club about 139 days a year.

Thus, identifying member engagement strategies and implementing relevant ancillary programs will help club operators facilitate regular attendance and long-term tenure

Well, IHRSA has good news for you. In addition to detecting trends and usage, the 2014 IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report digs deeper into specific applications that can be used in order to have more 10-year members. Loyalty programs, customized training and small group training classes are among a few of what is in the new publication.

Group exercise plays role in member retention

Polls ad surveys are great. But there are many things that have to be taken into account.

One of the most important ones is how extensive is the query? If there aren’t many participants than the numbers can be skewed.

The latest IHRSA Member Retention Report looks into group exercise’s impact on member retention. The report uses information from The Retention People’s TRP 10,000 – a survey of 10,000 United Kingdom health and fitness members. TRP 10,000, the biggest and most comprehensive survey of its kind to date, questioned 10,000 UK gym and health club members between July and September 2013.

So, what was determined and discovered during TRP 10,000 and is now in the IHRSA Member Retention Report Volume 2, Issue 2?

Read on to see the results and conclusions.

Teaching healthy lifestyles to children is fun with 'Active from A to Z'

When Jay Ablondi, IHRSA executive vice president of Global Products, was reading to his daughter Ella, now 3½, he noticed there were plenty of alphabet books but not necessarily many that had a message of exercise.

That gave him an idea. Or, actually, sparked an old idea that had been shelved for more than five years.

Ablondi and Stan Tran, IHRSA Association Management Systems administrator, had started working on a children’s book in the late 2000s but put it on hold due to time restraints and the recession. With his new revelation he went to Tran and set a deadline to finish, and publish, the book.

“Active from A to Z”, IHRSA’s first foray into publishing a children’s book, just became available for purchase this week. The 56-page publication is full of bright illustrations by Tran that complement Ablondi’s rhyming of animals being active and accompanying fun facts.

Read on more on how it came about and how to order a copy.
