Why are there more women in group exercise?

With 48 percent of club members male, one would think that participation in group exercise classes would also be split down the middle.

Surprisingly, according to the latest IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report, only 38% of group exercise participants are men. And, seeing options like yoga and spinning can often see numbers closer to a 50-50 split, other options like Zumba, P90X, Tabata and others have 3-to-1 or even 4-to-1 women-to-men ratios.

So, why the discrepancy? And, does it really even matter?

Read on to see what club managers think, and their suggestions.

Members: group exercise aids retention rates

Group exercise is huge. Anyone who has stepped in a club in the past couple years can see that.

Now that there is a good sample size to see what the effects of more classes, more variety, and specialized classes in a group format are, club owners and manager are starting to realize the importance.

Any good club manager is sure to check out his or her clubs’ group exercise participation, percentage of members who take part, and what are the retention rates of those who enroll in classes.

Last week IHRSA provided its members with some new numbers to check out, in IHRSA Member Retention Report, Volume 2, Number 2. And the facts show clubs exactly what they have been seeing inside their own walls - 88% of group exercise members retained their membership compared to 82% of gym-only members. The risk of cancelling was 56% higher in gym-only members compared to group exercisers.

See what IHRSA members think.

Group exercise plays role in member retention

Polls ad surveys are great. But there are many things that have to be taken into account.

One of the most important ones is how extensive is the query? If there aren’t many participants than the numbers can be skewed.

The latest IHRSA Member Retention Report looks into group exercise’s impact on member retention. The report uses information from The Retention People’s TRP 10,000 – a survey of 10,000 United Kingdom health and fitness members. TRP 10,000, the biggest and most comprehensive survey of its kind to date, questioned 10,000 UK gym and health club members between July and September 2013.

So, what was determined and discovered during TRP 10,000 and is now in the IHRSA Member Retention Report Volume 2, Issue 2?

Read on to see the results and conclusions.

Virtual group exercise has become a reality

Photo courtesy of Wexer VirtualFor those who participate in a group exercise classes most likely these scenarios have presented themselves to you:

  • you go to the gym specifically for a class but it is full
  • there are no classes available at the times you can get to the gym
  • you get in a class but the instructor is caught in traffic, is sick, or just doesn’t show up.
  • Over the past few years many clubs have started to offer classes in a new way where none of those, and other, issues, can arise.

Virtual exercise classes is a new phenomena that allows a club to either offer a class on a schedule so interested parties can participate with other members, or, allow members to click play on the pre-recorded instruction video on their own, making the offering available whenever the club is open. All of this can be offered without a staff member present.
