Members: group exercise aids retention rates

Group exercise is huge. Anyone who has stepped in a club in the past couple years can see that.

Now that there is a good sample size to see what the effects of more classes, more variety, and specialized classes in a group format are, club owners and manager are starting to realize the importance.

Any good club manager is sure to check out his or her clubs’ group exercise participation, percentage of members who take part, and what are the retention rates of those who enroll in classes.

Last week IHRSA provided its members with some new numbers to check out, in IHRSA Member Retention Report, Volume 2, Number 2. And the facts show clubs exactly what they have been seeing inside their own walls - 88% of group exercise members retained their membership compared to 82% of gym-only members. The risk of cancelling was 56% higher in gym-only members compared to group exercisers.

See what IHRSA members think.

Motivating those who have gone awry

The first quarter of the year is over and for many companies it is time to hit the books and spreadsheets to figure out the upcoming fiscal year’s budget.

While that is true in the fitness industry, too, it is also the time to look at what happened at the start of the quarter. Specifically, this is about the time that all of those who joined the club at the start of the year, as well as those who made New Year’s resolutions to hit certain goals and to change their lifestyle, might be falling off the wagon.

Many clubs keep a keen eye on these two groups to make sure they don’t slip. Sometimes programs specifically re-motivating members are instituted, other times a health club is diligent on how members are faring and intervene  before they lose them.

Read on to see tips and examples of motivation.

Club workouts keeping pace with popularity of endurance event craze

Members of Dakotah! Sport and Fitness take part in a class for an endurance event. There is no doubt that the endurance race craze is here to stay.

In addition to the extremely popular Tough Mudder with its incredible marketing and packed-to-the-gills entrants, there are similar events - but less taxing on the body - like the Spartan Race, Warrior Dash, triathlons, half marathons and others. A little down the ladder are “mini” events like the Rugged Maniac, local obstacle course races and 5K and 10Ks, to name a few.

It appears that individuals are looking for new challenges. Jumping over fire, running down muddy mountains, and going out for a few hours of miles and miles of running, biking and swimming are the new ways to push yourself.

With all the options out there, and more and more people hitting the gym and getting in shape, it is the natural progression that “boot camps,” group exercise classes and personal training specifically for these events are now being offered.

Dakotah! Sport and Fitness is a community in itself

Fitness clubs in in all shapes and sizes, offerings, and different clientele and employees.

For Dakotah! Sport and Fitness, in many ways it is unlike most places you will step foot in. First off, it is owned and run by a local Sioux community, in Prior Lake, Minn. Inside the club the offerings are not unlike a small town - pool, ice rink, bowling alley, rock wall, deli, and much, much more.

And the amenities don't end there. Throughout the year Dakotah! hosts blood drives, a farmer's market and various races and events for members.

Read on to see what else this Minnesota gem has to offer.

Bring the club outdoors during nice weather

Hampshire Hills Sport and Fitness Club takes its yoga class outside in nice weather.Granted, a place to work out is not about aesthetic beauty. You are there to essentially to accomplish a goal – get in better shape, be it aerobic, strength, agility or mobility.

However, if you can add a little variety to your environs, then more likely that not you will enjoy yourself more and want to keep going back.

As a gym owner that is music to their ears. Keeping members happy is one of the biggest reasons for high retention rates. One way to accomplish that is to take the gym outdoors during nice weather.
