Members' Christmas wish-lists vary

When you are young you write your Christmas gift list on a clean sheet of paper, with your favorite pen and in your best handwriting. Then you give it to your parents who then mail it to the North Pole, attention Santa Claus.

As you get older you usually are in a relationship and thus the process is much different. There can be subtle hints like leaving a catalog (or, in this age, a website) open to the item you long for with hopes someone will stumble upon it. Or you can bring it up in conversation or point it out when you see it at a store. If you feel the person buying it for you isn’t getting the hint, say something like, “I am thinking of getting this” and hopefully they will be the one purchasing it for you.

We asked IHRSA members what they wanted for the holiday, now less than one week away. I gave them the option to tell us what they hoped for a member of their club or a family member. The requests should have been health- and fitness-related.

Get involved to become part of the community, build brand recognition

Joey from Curl Fitness encourages a runner during a jog-a-thon.Angela Amedio opened her spin studio six months ago. Along with all the obvious items on her checklist prior to cutting the ribbon and opening the doors – like purchasing equipment, hiring staff, picking out soap for the locker rooms and every other detail – she had to figure out how to make a name for her new business.

There are many ways to go about it. But, of course, cost, time and who to target has to be measured to see what is most appropriate and efficient.

For Amedio, entrenching herself and the Saratoga Spinning Studio into the Saratoga Springs, N.Y., community was imperative.

In a half year she has participated in two fundraiser events, with a third next week, joined the Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Tourism and Convention Bureau.

The most popular way to get a company’s name out there, outside of advertising, is to take part in a community event. And there is not busier time of the year than fall. With school back in session and residents back from their summer homes or vacations, this is when it is all happening. From health fundraisers like cancer walks to fall festivals at schools it is nearly impossible to go more than a day without hearing of a new one, especially in October with the numerous Breast Cancer Month events.

Ride a smooth wave with Curl Fitness

Oftentimes you step into a club for the first time and you can feel the pressure from members who care about nothing other than their workout. That can be due to management that allows the club to take on the negative vibe.

At Curl Fitness, which has been open for a little less than one year, owners Becky Hartman and Jill Sperry give off a laid-back feel that resonates throughout the club.

They started out by hiring a staff that shared their vision and now its close to 500 members can enjoy a relaxed and stress-free workout.
