Weight issues cut more years off life than cigarettes

You think smoking is bad for you? Try not exercising.

In a study released this week in PLOS Medicine shows that in extreme cases – carrying 100 more pounds than they should be – die anywhere from 6.5 to 13.7 years earlier than those of average weight.

Information for the study was taken from 20 large studies of obese in United States, Sweden and Australia - almost 10,000 overweight and 300,000 average weight individuals.

Smokers with an average weight lost on average 8.9 years of their life.

Study: school sports good for mental health

New research shows that youth who play team sports in junior and high school are less likely to be stressed and have better mental health.

Three years after the 850 Canadian participants graduated, those who participated in team sports were less likely to experience depressive symptoms, had less stress in their lives, and rated their mental health closer to excellent than poor.

Jack Raglin, Ph.D., a professor in the department of kinesiology at Indiana University-Bloomington agreed. He was not part of the study, but he added that there is considerable evidence that exercise provides significant psychological benefits. 

“Single sessions of activity reduce anxiety, improve mood, and raise feelings of energy that last for several hours,” he said in a Health Behavior News Service

story. “Long-term participation can significantly improve conditions such as clinical anxiety and depression to a degree that rivals medication, both in adults and adolescents.”

Republicans, Democrats work (out) together

The U.S. House of Representatives talk about bipartisanship, unfortunately rarely is it accomplished.

One place it does happen is not where you would expect – the gym.

Markwayne Mullin, a Republican representative from Oklahoma, leads an early morning workout at the House gym almost every morning Congress is in session. The gathering is a mix between CrossFit and circuit training, said Mullin, a former mixed-martial arts cage fighter.

Working out together is knocking down the walls and barriers often seen on Capitol Hill. The Congressional Future Caucus, a group designed to work on long-term issues most likely to affect the next generation, was cultivated between a Democrat and Republican during the early morning workouts.
