Tips and suggestions for 55+ wanting to work out

There is no limit to the age of a person wanting to work out. IHRSA reported last month that a record number of people hit the gym last year.

For those 55 and over, 10 million were members of a club. That jumped more than 500% since 1990.

But, of course, there are still many in that age group who don’t hit the gym, due to intimidation, lack of knowledge in a club, or any other number or reasons.

The type of club, program or trainer you choose could make all the difference.

Eat well, earn money

Harvard Pilgrim, a Massachusetts health insurance company, has been offering its employees an incentive to buy healthy foods. And soon, that will be offered to its plans’ subscribers.

Local company NutriSavings runs the program for Harvard Pilgrim, which employs 1,200 and has 1.1 million subscribers. The scoring system ranks foods based on a 100-point scale. Foods rich in nutrients like fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals get high scores; those loaded with fat, sugar, sodium, and saturated fats score low.

Employees get $10 month for participating in the program and another $10 for a score of 60 or more.

Majority of Americans not losing weight and don’t think they are obese

Even though two out of every three Americans are classified as obese or overweight, more than half don’t consider themselves to be and are not attempting to lose weight.

According to a study by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, 55% of Americans don’t think they are overweight and are not losing weight.

The data was culled from Gallup’s Health and Healthcare surveys from 2011 to 2013, which asks about weight and weight loss attempts.

When separated by gender, the numbers for losing weight and consider themselves overweight are 50% for men and 60% for women.

Gym attendance doesn’t have to slow in the summer

Summer is here and it may be the best time to hit the gym.

According to a Today, clubs and chains all across the United States are looking to get members in the doors with all sorts of deals.

And you don’t have to be a member. IHRSA reported that a record 62.1 million people used a health club in 2013. A whopping 14% - 9.2 million – weren’t members.
