Lifting weights may help reduce diabetes risk

Adults are advised to partake in 30 minutes of exercise a week. A new study suggests women should lift weights, too.

The health of 100,000 U.S. nurses in an eight-year period shows that lifting weights and doing push-ups or a similar resistance exercise can lower type 2 diabetes, according to Harvard Medical School researchers.

Researchers feel that having a great muscle mass can be a bugger against diabetes, as studies show to be the case in men.

Going back to the beginning

It is very easy for a business to get caught up in what is going ojn around them in order to get ahead or stay ahead.

Fitness First UK admittedly did this when it got away from why it started in the first place, 20 years ago: a place for members to get more from their training.

So, the chain has done a complete rebranding, opened new clubs with a new style, after a top-to-bottom review of the company, clubs and what it offers.

“We have a choice: we can either continue to build clubs, and let members get on with it, or we can get back to the real reason why Fitness First came into existence 20 years ago …. ,” said UK Marketing Director David Jones.

Virgin Active readying itself for stock market, expansion

In anticipation of a major expansion and an initial public offering, Virgin Active has dipped into the frozen food industry to nab a key player for its team.

Mark Burrows, currently at Iglo, the owner of Bird’s Eye, is expected to become the new finance chief at Virgin, replacing Paul Woolf, who also came over from Iglo.

As part of its expansion, Virgin is contemplating new clubs in London, Singapore and South Africa, according to a story on the Key 103 website, a Manchester, England, music station. Last week it announced 100 million pounds will be invested in renovating current clubs in the UK.

Apps for keeping New Year’s resolution

It’s three weeks into the new year and you are already having issues keeping your resolution to get in better shape and make it to the gym more often?

There are many apps out there that help you set goals, track what you have done and motivate you. There is a list of a handful, and sometimes more, for each category.

Of course, most apps connect to social media. So, if you enjoy working with friends, like people to know how you are doing, or just are a social media nut and like to post everything you do, it is easy to let the Facebookers and Twittersphere abreast of your progress.
