Study: traveling for work can be unhealthy

It isn’t surprising that a new study on those who travel for work are less healthy than those who do not. 

According to a Columbia University study conducted two years ago involving 13,000 workers, those who traveled at least 20 days a month were more than two and one-half times more likely to report they were in poor health than those who travel up to five days a month. And they were almost two times more likely to be considered obese. 

Obvious factors that led to the findings included late dinners, unhealthy eating habits, travel delays and being away from the comforts of home.  

Pair of moguls starts fitness water option

Two giant names in the entertainment industry have teamed up to create a new fitness water brand. 

Mark Wahlberg and Sean “Diddy” Combs have launched a new electrolyte-enhanced, post-work out drink, AQUAhydrate. The high pH levels, as well as 72 electrolytes and ulta-purifiication, make it different than other options. 

Nautilus expanding its brand

Nautilus is using its recognizable brands as a way to venture further. 

The company makes exercise equipment under the brands Nautilus, Bowflex, Schwinn and Universal. With a new licensing agreement it hopes to partner those names with other fitness product companies. 

Nautilus has also launched some new lower price point equipment to cater to those who also like to work out at home. 

Snap Fitness plans on D.C.-area expansion

Snap Fitness, which has two locations in Alexandria, Virg., and others in Virginia suburbs, is planning on another 10 in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area in the next five years. 

Snap is among the emerging trend of low-cost, no-contract facilities in the United States. The locations are typically smaller – up to 3,000 square feet – and do not have pools or racquetball courts. They are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

Consumer affairs survey finds clubs’ violations

The Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs recently conducted a month-long investigation of health clubs and found numerous violations. 

The survey of Boston-area facilities happened from December to January – the time when many new members join clubs. 

Among the violations was failure to post membership prices and failure to display members right to cancel a members within three days.
