The nice thing about Liikuntakeskus Hukka, a club in Finland that will soon be celebrating 40 years, is you can trust it will be around for a long time.
The Rounaja family, who own the club, has had a variety of businesses for the past six generations, covering 250 years. The longest was a bookstore for 225 years, with others being a print house, horse taxi, salmon smoking and real estate.
While many of those businesses invoke images from a hundred or more years ago, rest assured Liikuntakeskus Hukka is certainly modern. The family members who run the club provide most the modern amenities like Les Mills classes (Liikuntakeskus Hukka was named the 2nd most active in Europe), saunas, massages, beauty salon, small group classes and more. And, it is certainly in the 21st century as it uses it social media outlets in order to engage and educate members.
Club vision/mission statement: More years to your life – More life to your years.
Classes: 28 different, including most of Les Mills and several own classes, including warm yoga and stretching classes. Zumba, TRX, functional training circuit, etc. We were selected to be the 2nd most active Les Mills group fitness center in Europe and 9th globally. We invest a lot in our group fitness.
Offerings: Five group fitness studios with over 100 weekly lessons, three gyms, four indoor tennis courts, four squash courts, 8 badminton courts, infrared saunas, Finnish saunas, massage, beauty salon, personal training, small group training, etc.
Innovative ideas at club: We love the fact that our gym is a get together place for our members. We host several member parties and events during the year and have a programming director that comes up with ideas all the time.
We offer a free active play area for members’ children instead of a passive one.
Our Facebook page has become a very active and strong media for contacting and talking to our members. We ask for their opinion and get them to come up with new development ideas. This is a good way to become user friendly and to show your brand with good content.
We have a special relaxing and stretching studio with heated tatamis. It is a low cost item that has been very much enjoyed by our members!
Where you hope the club will be in 5 years: Close to 5,000 members and with a spa/pool area added. Maybe some extra space built or branched out.

Describe area/community club is in: Oulu is a town of about 150,000 inhabitants in northern Finland. Hukka is located a few blocks from the center, in an area dedicated to sports.
Do you have any community outreach programs: We donated physiotherapy equipment to the hospital through member donations and have given exercise equipment to preschoolers.
Famous former or current members: The best NHL hockey players from Finland come from Hukka.
How long have you been a member of IHRSA and what IHRSA programs have you instituted and events have you attended?: We have been a member since 2007 and have attended most of the European and many of the International congresses since then.
