Stand-up paddling is a great workout for body and mind

PHOTO COURTESY TRIPADVISOR.COMIf you live along the coast you would be hard-pressed to not see people standing on surfboards and paddling around.

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP as it often called) was made popular by surfer Laird Hamilton about 10 years ago, but has been around for hundreds of years as it was a mode of transportation by Native Americans. Now, according to the Outdoor Industry Assn., 1.24 million people did SUP last year, an 18% increase from the year before.

The beauty of the SUP is that it gives you an overall workout – both body and mind. Even if you are in still water you will use muscles from head to toe – feet, legs, back, arms, and your core. Other area will be worked just from balancing on the board. The intensity of the workout can be upped if you are going upstream in a river or in the ocean, battling waves.

You don’t need to be a surfer in order to take part. Beginners can start by kneeling on the board and work their way up. And now many shops along the shore rents the boards, which are different from regular surf boards since they are heavier, wider and more stable.

Zumba branching out

There is no better sense of accomplishment and well-being than when your workout results in a good deed. Millions of people every year run, bike and walk to support a cause.

Zumba is building on the successful Zumbathon charity events to create Zumba Love. The idea is to foster charitable initiatives to raise funds and awareness for causes like Susan G. Komen, American Heart Association, Augie’s Quest, Muscular Dystrophy and more.

The official debut will be at the 2012 Zumba Instructor Convention in Orlando, Fla., on Aug. 9. Zumba will throw a huge Zumba Fitness Concert to benefit the Party in Pink campaign where 7,000 Zumba instructors will wear pink Zumba wear during a Zumba workout.

24 Hour Fitness for sale

Fitness club chain, 24 Hour Fitness, is apparently on the selling block.

Forstmann Little, the private equity firm that owns the chain, is selling the club - which could fetch more than $2 billion - according to anonymous sources. 24 Hour Fitness has 425 U.S., China, Hong Kong and Singapore locations.

According to the New York Times story, health club chains have been attractive acquisition targets for private equity firms because their membership fees generate predictable cash flows that they can use to pay off the debt taken on to pay for the company.
