Everybody loves a deal. Why do you think Groupon, Living Social and other discount websites are so popular?

Using that way of thinking, Mount Vernon Athletic Club has instituted a Member Benefits program. By showing the MTVAC key tag, members can get discounts ranging food, dry cleaning, chiropractic office visit and sewing machine and vacuum service. The added bonus – other than rewarding existening members and bringing in new ones - is many of the offerings are locally owned or even member-owned businesses.

The perks in the community may get some people through the doors, but what is inside is what keeps them there.

The club, currently celebrating its 40th anniversary, features tennis, Mom’s Fit Club, Intensity Club and a host of wellness offerings – massage, tanning, make up and skin care. And it cares about the well-being of its members by keeping fans of its Facebook page up to date on what is happening near the club, like road closures and community events.

This ensures a healthy and safe start while also providing ongoing coaching to keep our members active and fit for life!  We have cultivated successful partnerships with many community businesses both to raise money for/with them (Our annual Swing For Pink fundraiser for Breast Cancer to benefit Inova hospital has raised over $85,000 in the past 6 years) and we do corporate wellness programs with local businesses including corporate team-building events to help keep their staff healthy and at work. We also recently expanded our Tennis platform with the creation of the Blue Chip Tennis Academy and during the summer months we are at over 15 local community associations and swim clubs offering youth tennis programming.

Where you hope the club will be in 5 years: Our five-year plan would include opening another location, maintaining and expanding on a successful corporate wellness program, getting our medical referral program off the ground and increasing our retention rates for new members.

Area in which you would be of assistance for networking: Anything having to do with Tennis programs and expansion/revenue generations. Software systems and marketing; we recently upgraded new club software and also went to using the cloud for all our internal communications through Microsoft SharePoint; we are continually looking to innovate and easy to use ways reduce barriers for our members to utilize the diverse offerings we provide.  Facebook and our mobile website are two areas that we continually strive to improve while we look to develop our own club app!

Describe area/community club is in: Our club is located in the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria, Va., (close to the historic home of George Washington).  Considered the DC Metro area for its close proximity to our nation’s capital (approximately 18 miles south), there is an abundance of rivers, parks, bike trails, monuments, museums, historic homes and battlefields to enjoy. Four seasons, yet relatively mild weather provide the opportunity for year round sporting activities. The bustling waterfront in “Old Town” and distinct neighborhoods like Del Ray or more suburban neighborhoods like Mansion House and Stratford Landing provide the perfect family oriented community that is within a short metro ride to all the urban offerings of nearby cities.

Do you have any community outreach programs?: We do a tremendous amount of community outreach! Beyond the Charity event Swing For Pink and summer tennis camps for kids, and we also help raise money for a local APTS program (Alternative Paths Training School, pioneers in educational, behavioral and vocational programing for students with autism). We have partnered with the Fairfax local fire station to do a kids fun run to help fight childhood obesity and gave school backpacks, sports equipment and new sneakers to all who participated.  We do an annual Turkey Trot with the local elementary schools, a Van Metre Fun Run 5K as well as a second yearly tennis fundraising event called Helping Hands to benefit childhood cancer. We have had community health fairs with free pulmonary screenings and invited local groups like the Red Hat Society to learn about fitness and nutrition with our free seminars.

Famous former or current members: Margo Jurgensen, wife of Sonny Jurgensen, and Wilt Chamberlain
