Healthy choices by Wisconsin representative

Wisconsin Congressman Ron Kind yesterday introduced the Healthy CHOICES Act of 2012. It is a multi-faceted approach to fighting obesity, both in children and adults. 

The act has five areas of impact: Prevention and Treatment; Improving Access for Physical Activity; Improving Access to National Information and Healthy Foods; Realigning Transportation to Promote Healthy Lifestyles; and Research Tools. 

The Campaign to End Obesity Action Fund whcih advocates for changes in federal policy that will enable more Americans to eat healthy and be active, as well as those that provide appropriate medical treatment for patients, applaud the measure.

Tony Post knows a thing or two about athletic footwear.

The businessman who started FiveFingers has gathered enough funding for his new venture – Topo Athletic.

The lightweight sneakers are geared CrossFit training, but will also be a good choice for running.

The company, which incorporated in August and now has 10 full-time employees, expects to unveil the products at a January trade show in Salt Lake City. 

GoodLife adds seven locations

Canada’s largest fitness chain just got bigger.

GoodLife Fitness yesterday announced it has acquired seven new locations bringing its total to almost 300. Among the new GoodLife clubs are three in Calgary.

The seven clubs are independently owned Gold’s Gyms.

“We are excited about the prospect of acquiring these seven new locations in Alberta and Ontario to further grow the options of locations for our members and to welcome the Gold’s Gym Members to the GoodLife Family,” said David Patchell-Evans, GoodLife Fitness Founder & CEO.



Coalition looks to get Minnesota ‘Fit’

Fit Minnesota - a coalition of health-minded organizations and companies, including IHRSA, Anytime Fitness, Life Time Fitness and Snap Fitness – was launched on Dec. 13. 

The goal is to increase the physical activity of Minnesota residents that in turn will improve the state’s health, both physically and fiscally. 

“FIT Minnesota believes we can continue our state’s leadership role by increasing incentives which encourage physical activity,” remarked Chuck Runyon, CEO, Anytime Fitness. “Study after study have shown that incentives provided by Minnesota health insurers are working.” 



Anytime Fitness #7 on top franchise list

With 2,000 locations and more than 1.7 million members, Anytime Fitness is one of the top fitness companies. According to Entrepreneur Magazine, it is one of the top companies, period.

The Minnesota-based company was placed at #6 in the 2013 Franchise 500.

As some of the reasons for the high ranking – better than McDonald’s and Pizza Hut - Entrepreneur said, “ …  the company aims to minimize the hassle of fitness, allowing its customers to work up a sweat wherever they may be, at any time. Locations are small and unintimidating … It's the closest thing to having a basement gym of one's own.”
