Jack LaLanne Passes Away at 96, Leaves Behind a Legacy in the Fitness Industry

Jack LaLanne, the original celebrity fitness guru and the man credited with creating the first health club, died Sunday at age 96. His devotion to his health and his family were unparalleled and he will be sorely missed by the fitness industry.

LaLanne is most popular for his nationally televised exercise show. He was also an early proponent of combining nutrition and exercise regimens. In 2009, he was given a Liftime Achievement Award at the Club Industry Conference in Chicago.

His biggest contribution to the health club industry was opening Physical Culture Studios, the first modern health club, in Oakland, CA. His club company continued to grow and it laid the foundation for today's health club industry.

“I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon, but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for,” Jack’s wife of 51 years Elaine wrote in response to her husband’s death.

In the past few years, he was often quoted as saying: “I can’t die, it will ruin my reputation.” His reputation will live on untarnished in our eyes.
