As More Romanians Work Out, One Pioneering Club Chain Leads the Pack

At first glance, the Swedish and Romanian health and fitness landscapes don’t appear to have much in common. Competition is fierce among health clubs in Sweden, and consumers have high expectations as a result. Romanians, however, are in the earlier stages of incorporating fitness—and health clubs—into their lives. 

Despite these disparities, Kent Orrgren—who has managed clubs in both markets—sees more similarities than differences.

Exercise Makes Life Better (and Longer) for Women

When it comes to health, there are some ways in which women are different from men. For example, women respond differently to diet and exercise regimens, and are more likely to die from heart disease. In honor of Women’s Health Weeka week focused on encouraging and empowering women to make their health a prioritywe’ve compiled a list of ways physical activity can help women live longerand better.


Women often find themselves juggling a lot of moving pieces—work, children, household, etc., which can all be very stressful. Fortunately, physical activity is known to reduce stress and improve mood. Research shows that exercise can decrease stress and increase mental resources to deal with it, boost mood during pregnancy, and benefit students. Vigorous exercise can also decrease stress, and improve mental health and sleep in young adults.

What is the most fulfilling part of being a business leader in the fitness industry?

The ability to make a difference through health and fitness. I don’t think any other industry makes the same kind of difference in the lives of others as ours does. Working in this industry is rewarding, motivational, and inspiringwe inspire youths to be active from a young age, while also encouraging seniors to be active as a way of prolonging life. To me, continuing to make a difference through health and fitness is most fulfilling.

The Spreading Threat of Sales Taxes on Membership Dues

States looking to apply a sales tax to club memberships and charges like personal training is not a new phenomenon. There are some states that already apply their sales tax to memberships, such as Connecticut, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Washington. What is concerning and bears watching is not only the number of states considering a sales tax on club memberships, but which states are now considering doing it.
