Zumba is selling excitement

Anyone who walked through the doors to the trade show floor during last month's IHRSA International Convention & Trade Show was most likely amazed by the lights, sounds and excitement.

A quick scan of the 10 to 15 of the 364 booths you could immediately see and most likely you were drawn to Zumba, which was about 100 feet from the doors on the right. The dancing, the music, the many participants and the same amount watching beckoned you to go over and take a look.

An employee of Holland-Mark, a marketing strategy firm, attended her second IHRSA convention and, in her own words, was "blown away" by Zumba. She explains in the Holland-Mark blog that she undersatands how Inc. magazine named the Florida-based company its Company of the Year, how it has grown 750% in the past three years, and how there are 100,000 licensed Zumba instructors around the world.

Boston gets moving with walk, Zumba flash mob

Photo courtesy of Boston Moves for HealthA year ago Boston Mayor Thomas Menino launched Boston Moves for Health. With it he set some pretty lofty goals for the citizens of Beantown - to move 10 million miles and lose a collective one million pounds.

Despite coming up well short, the mayor and the city are still staying active and hoping to attract new participants.

This week the Boston Public Health Commission planned a noon walk and Zumba flash mob where 200 people showed up. It also was a kick-off to Wednesday's National Walking Day.

John McCarthy Industry Visionary Award: Zumba┬« Fitness, LL

Congratulations to Alberto Perlman, Co-Founder and CEO of Zumba® Fitness, LLC receiving the John McCarthy Industry Visionary Award from Bill McBride.

There is no question of what Zumba has done for fitness, and the fitness industry over the past decade. And with 14 million people in almost 150,000 locations worldwide participating in one of its many diverse classes each week, its brand and reach is unquestioned and unprecedented.

This Week in the Fitness Industry 2-22-13

A couple interesting partnerships in this edition of This Week in the Fitness Industy.

First Lady Michelle Obama and Big Bird team up to celebrate the third anniversary of the Let's Move! campaign. Not to be outdone, Lil John and Zumba will release the rapper's latest single.

Also, Life Time Fitness exceeds revenue expectations and exercise myths are dispelled.

Don't forget a roundup of news from the IHRSA blog.

Music driving some fitness classes

There is no denying that there are alternative reasons for going to a fitness class other than ... well, fitness.

There is the obvious social aspect. Your friends go, so you do. Or, maybe there is an attactive man or woman who you can look at while, oh yeah, getting in shape.

And some go for the music. Of course they don't go just for the music as they could just buy it and listen in their car, or on their iPod or computer. But, many choose which class based on what is being played. And then they probably buy a song they liked from the class afterwards. Some clubs will allow participants to make music requests on Facebook prior to a class.

It is a great venue for musical artists, too. Zumba classes are attended by 14 million people each week. That is a lot of ears. Vanilla Ice's mega-hit "Ice Ice Baby" was recently re-released with a new Latin sound for Zumba, resulting in 17,000 purchases.

Zumba ready to take over Seven Seas?

Zumba has taken over the world. That soon could include international waters.

A recent announcement by Norwegian Cruise Lines brings the number of cruise ship companies offerening Zumba classes to three. It joins Celebrity Cruises, which added the extremely popular class earlier this month, and Princess Cruises, which has been offering Zumba since 2011.

"We are excited to bring Zumba Fitness onboard our ships and offer guests not just a new way to work out, but an exhilarating and easy-to-follow dance fitness-party,” Norwegian CEO Kevin Sheehan said, in a statement.

Inc. magazine recognizes Zumba's Perlman

In December, Inc. Magazine named Zumba its Company of the Year for 2012. This wasn't just in the health and fitness world; this was all U.S. companies.

With a designation like that it goes without saying that there must be some clever and creative people at the top of the company.

Inc. realized that by recognizing Alberto Perlman, the CEO of the multi-faceted fitness company, as one its Top 5 CEOs to Watch in 2013.

Check out the story here.

Check it out. If you think you knew Zumba before, you might be surprised.

Zumba is Inc. magazine's Company of the Year

In the 10 years since Zumba was rebranded from Rumbacize - a dance/fitness class brought over from Colombia that had bits of salsa, merengue, and other Latin music and dance moves - it has certainly caught on.

Yes, that is one of the bigger understatements you will hear this week.

After selling tens of thousands of videos through infomercials at the beginning (which is now at more than 12 million), the multi-winged fitness company has its foot in numerous areas - Zumbatomic, for youth; Aqua Zumba; a Zumba video game; Zumba Love, its fundraising arm. Add in the Zumba apparel line and the more than million downloads for its 60 or so songs on iTunes and the company is gaining more speed and momentum every day.

These are just some of the reasons why yesterday Inc. magazine announced the company as its 2012 Company of the Year.
