This Week in the Fitness Industry 1-10-14

We are less than two weeks into the new year and already so much has happened in the health and fitness industry.

And seeing many of us are still catching our breath from the holidays, as well as the frigid cold across the U.S. due to the Polar Vortex, we are doing a recap of some of the big news from IHRSA members.

Of course, all of this can be found daily on the IHRSA blog.

Read on to see what Technogym, LA Fitness, Crunch Fitness, Celebrity Fitness, FIT-C and Active Sports Clubs has been bisy doing.

Technogym's latest technological advancement to be unveiled this week

Technogym will certainly be one of the biggest hits at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show, Jan. 7-10, when it unveils the first Google Glass-controlled treadmill.

The addition to Technogym's Wellness on the Go is a first for cardio equipment. Those with Google glasses can enjoy a totally personalized workout experience and even communicate with friends or a trainer from a webcam. It is part the company's UNITY technology, which allows users to to connect and engage with any Technogym equipment, anywhere in the world.

“With the look and feel of a tablet, Technogym’s UNITY console offers a revolutionary, interactive training experience. “It provides users with a personalized training program. It’s open to any third party app and device, like Google glasses or the many movement tracking devices,” said Nerio Alessandri, Technogym president and founder, in a press release.

General session speakers announed for IHRSA 2014

The general session spearkers during the IHRSA International Convention & Trade Show always packs the house. One reason is for the variety of speakers whose topics always come back to the health and fitness industry.

How else can you explain having both Havard social scientist professor Nicholas Christakis and Life is good co-founder Bert Jacobs on stage last year in Las Vegas?

The speakers for the 2014 event, in San Diego on March 12-15, was just announced today.

  • Wednesday, March 12: Sally Hogshead, best-selling author, will present “How to Fascinate: From First Impressions to Lasting Value." Sponsored by SPRI.
  • Thursday, March 13: Dan Heath, author & senior fellow at The CASE Center at Duke University, will present “Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work.” Sponsored by Technogym®.
  • Friday, March 14: Gary Vaynerchuk, author & co-founder of VaynerMedia, will present “The Thank You Economy. Sponsored by Matrix Fitness.

Blogger describes what it is like to work at IHRSA trade show booth

Twenty trainers worked at the Technogym booth during the 2013 IHRSA International Convention & Trade Show in Las Vegas. There are so many things going on at the IHRSA International Convention & Trade Show that it is impossible to cover every angle, every story, every person.

Good thing there is the Internet, and those who like to talk about their experiences. One angle we probably have never covered on is what it is like for the paid fitness workers at the booths.

The following is a blog by Lindsay, a NASM-certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor hired by Technogym to work out on its machines during the two-day trade show. She shows readers that everyone involved in the event works hard, sleeps little and gets so much out of it.

Read it here.

Christakis: networks' influence important

Nicholas Christakis has plenty of data on why people do what they do and how they are influenced.

Christakis, a Havard University professor, was the Wednesday general session speaker at the 32nd Annual International Convention & Trade Show. The session was sponsored by Technogym.

As those in the fitness industry know, members can easily influence their friends, neighbors and co-workers, especially if they enjoy their experience at the gym.

The full story can be seen here.

IHRSA 2013 exhibitor profile: Technogym

Technogym doesn’t need to bring in celebrities to attract trade show attendees to its booth. Consider it a bonus. Tra Thomas, 3-time pro bowl offensive lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles, and Josh Holland, trainer for Madonna, will be at booth 1549 to tout the products of the New Jersey company.

And there is plenty to talk about - from cardio, strength and functional training, to the wellness cloud and Technogym Ecosystem.

Technogym’s New Quarters

Technogym: world headquarters teamIf you saw the September issue of CBI, I’m sure that you recall the impressive, two-page photo of Technogym’s new Wellness Campus in Cesena, Italy, with the hundreds of members of its corporate “team” gathered in front of its breathtaking new world headquarters. (See “It Takes a Village,” September CBI, pg. 38.) It might have seemed, at the time, that Technogym was entitled to rest on its laurels for awhile. But, while it was making headlines in Cesena, it was also elaborating on its history 4,200 miles away—in Fairfield, New Jersey. Curious? Read more.

Attendees take in seminars, keynote speaker at European Congress 2012

There is obviously a social aspect to European Congress 2012 with opportunities like dinners, parties and networing events to talk shop and meet new colleagues.

But, really, the reason members attend IHRSA events like this one, the International Convention & Trade Show and others, is for the seminars and speakers. This is where you learn about new equipment, marketing techniques, retention tricks, and many other subjects to help your business prosper.

In addition to the break-out sessions, this year's keynote speaker was Shaun Smith, former head of Customer Service, Sales and Marketing Training, British Airways, and founder & partner, smith+co, who talked about how to be bold in business.
