D.C. council tries to sneak in tax on health and fitness centers

The proposal to tax health clubs in Washington, D.C., is back and IHRSA is looking for local clubs to take action.

Four years ago the new Washington, D.C., sales tax, dubbed "yoga tax" in public, would levy the District's 5.75 percent sales tax on gyms, health clubs and yoga studios. Lawmakers were bombarded with protests and eventually dropped the proposal.

Washington Council Chairman Phil Mendelson got initial approval last week that would tax health and fitness centers, among other businesses, beginning Jan. 1, 2015. The proposal was made public May 27, only 18 hours before the vote.

IHRSA is asking clubs in Washington, D.C., to take action against the proposal by speaking out. Click here to contact the council and speak out against a tax on your health club membership. Be sure to share the link with your members.

IHRSA defends the industry by preventing states from imposing harmful restrictions on membership contracts, restricting access to qualified personal trainers and taxing club dues and services. IHRSA also works to promote clubs by supporting legislation that would create incentives for more people to become physically active and join their local health club.
