Remember to Keep Current Members Happy During 'New Year's Resolution' Busy Period

Clubs see an influx of new members in January, resulting in crowded areas.Health club owners and management are so busy signing up new members and catering to their needs, during the influx of “New Year’s Resolutions” members in the first few weeks of January, it can be easy to forget your current members.

Most longtime members have been lifting weights and taking classes for years with nary a peep. So not realizing they may be inconvenienced for the first couple months of the year would be understandable if they don’t bring it to your attention.

According to IHRSA, January is the busiest month for new memberships, with 12% of all contracts signed in the first month of the year. You would be hard-pressed to find a club that doesn’t see increased traffic for the first couple months of the year.

So, what is the best way to assure one big happy family – both new members and veterans?

Read on to see what club managers have to say.

IHRSA webinar: sell experience vs. price

Jason Reinhardt truly believes that you can’t judge a book by its cover when it comes to sales. One just never knows who is going to buy a membership and who is only looking for a free day at the gym.

Because of this Reinhardt - who is hosting IHRSA’s next webinar, “Increase Sales by Selling the Experience vs. the Price” on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2 to 3 p.m. EST – makes sure his staff gets to know the prospective member who comes in to learn more about his facility.

Read on to see what Reinhardt will talk about in the next IHRSA webinar.

Clubs switch gears with staff during summer

Summer is one of those times during the year that there is a need to change staffing. In some areas of the world the summer sees an influx of members, club visits and events and happenings at a club. Other places around the globe see a slowdown due to alternative options outside during nice weather.

With changes in needs it is important for a club to think ahead so they aren’t caught off-guard. Last-minute decisions can result in some areas seeing responsibilities slip through the cracks—lack of coverage, confusion on new schedules and messy areas among them—all due to poor planning.

For the most part, unless the heat is oppressive and a place with air conditioning is the best place to burn off calories and get the endorphins going, a health club slows down from June through September.

Read on to see how some health clubs rearrange staff during slower times.

IHRSA Member Profile: Go M.A.D. Fitness

Go M.A.D. Fitness (Go Make A Difference) has been in the fitness game for less one year, but that doesn’t mean it is a novice in the industry.

Owner Jason Reinhardt has been involved in IHRSA for 15 years when he worked in other companies. In the past two years he has spoken at the IHRSA International Convention & Trade Show, and was the featured speaker at a recent IHRSA webinar.

And Reinhart obviously knows what he is doing: there are already 1,100 members in a town of 20,000. It may be the free one-hour meeting upon signing up with the gym, the variety of offerings, or its support of the local Special Olympians, many who train at the club.
