Health club investment may be the hot trend

With the announcement at the end of the year that Anytime Fitness sat atop Entrepreneur magazine's Franchise 500, it is safe to assume that investors of all shapes and sizes and those wanting to own a franchise are salivating at the possibility of getting its hands on fitness clubs and businesses.

“Traditionally, fast-food companies have been at or near the top of the (Entrepreneur) rankings. The fact that a fitness club franchise is at the top of the list this year says a lot about societal trends and what franchising analysts believe consumers will be looking for in the years to come,” said Tom Gilles, director of franchise sales for Anytime Fitness, in a Franchise Chatter story.

Franchise Chatter expects industry growth and stronger franchise in the next five years:

  • A November 2013 report by IBISWorld market research firm shows the industry will benefit from health-conscious baby boomers signing up for club memberships.
  • Health club memberships increased from 47.7 million to an estimated 52.6 million during the past five years and will continue to grow.
  • One-fourth of club members are over 55 years old, which is the fastest-growing age group for memberships.
  • According to IHRSA, health clubs see 59 million people annually
