Join IHRSA at FIBO and Tell Us Why You Get Active

Stop by the IHRSA stand (D56 in Hall 5.2) at FIBO in Cologne, Germany, and tell us why you get active. The IHRSA team will have a white board for members and visitors to write why they get active. Photos will be taken and posted on social media as part of the #WhyGetActive campaign.

You can also learn about the new #WhyGetActive video contest for IHRSA members. This is an opportunity for you to share the great work your club is doing, and compete for some bonus publicity and the opportunity to help an organization or charity in your community. The contest runs from 21 March – 31 May, and a winner will be announced the first week of June.

The IHRSA Europe team will be on hand to answer any questions members may have about the upcoming annual IHRSA European Congress to be held 17-20 October in Seville, Spain. This is the 16th annual Congress, which has rotated throughout Europe bringing industry leaders together since the inaugural event was held in Brussels in 2001.

“The IHRSA team will also be happy to help with any questions about member benefits and services,” said Alison Giannaras, associate vice president of international development for IHRSA, who will also be at FIBO.

“We had the opportunity to meet many European members at IHRSA 2016 in Orlando,” said Jeroen van Liempd, IHRSA Europe director, who attended the event with Angela Meurer, IHRSA Europe general manager. “We are bringing a bigger team to FIBO, and we are all very excited to meet more members and share what IHRSA has to offer.”

IHRSA Associates in EUROPE

The industry’s growing strength on display at FIBO 2015

It was another successful year for IHRSA associate members at FIBO, Europe’s trade show for health, fitness, and wellness products and services, which was held in April in Cologne, Germany.

An impressive crowd of 138,000 visitors over the four days of the event came to view the wares of 725 exhibitors, who showcased the latest in fitness innovations, and explored the opportunities of emerging industry trends, at the city’s Exhibition Centre. A number of IHRSA associate members were among the companies that were pleased they’d made the trek to Cologne.

“Massive numbers of both national and international customers and prospects frequented our stand, especially on the first two days,” reports Marco Jakobs, the sales director of Johnson Health Tech GmbH.

Chris Clawson, the president of Life Fitness, notes that “FIBO is a show that gives us the opportunity to meet not only with our customers from around the world, but we meet with a lot of our key distributors, as well.”

The results, in terms of attendance, exhibitor reviews, and sales, coming on the heels of the highly successful IHRSA International Convention and Trade Show held the previous month in Los Angeles, paint a positive portrait of the global fitness industry.

“The global fitness industry continues to demonstrate strength across the board,” says Melissa Rodriguez, IHRSA’s senior research manager. “The development of the fitness and health market continues with strong momentum, and the industry is still on the up and up,” adds FIBO show director Ralph Scholz.

According to IHRSA research, nearly 50 million people now train at health and fitness facilities throughout Europe. And, according to an economic trend index tallied at FIBO, Scholz points out that the industry’s prospects remain bright. Nearly 60% of the companies surveyed said that they expect business to continue to “grow” or “grow strongly,” and only 11% foresaw a slight business cool-down.

For those planning their travel itinerary, the IHRSA International Convention and Trade Show will be held March 21–24, 2016, in sunny Orlando, Florida, and FIBO will once again take place in Cologne on April 7–10, 2016.

FIBO 2014 Innovation Awards

The Slack Nut, a rocking chair. In April, attendees at FIBO, the International Trade Fair for Fitness, Wellness, and Health, finally heard what they’d been waiting to know for so long - the identities of the winners of the FIBO Innovation Awards 2014.

The awards jury selected 12 products, out of a field of 33 entries, to compete in four categories: “Training Equipment,” “Health Promotion,” “Interior and Design,” and “Training Concepts.” One winner was then selected from each.

The products considered included devices that enhance fitness via balance exercises, offer precise methods for measuring physical fitness, promote health via vibration technologies, or bring the outside world into the gym via design.

The winners are:

  • The Slack Nut, by Slack Nut GbR, a rocking “shell” that’s used for exercises to improve balance, coordination, agility, and strength
  • The new flexxvib line, by proxomed Medizintechnik, which employs vibration to provide a gentle solution for relieving back pain
  • Pixformance, from Pixformance Sports, an intelligent training concept that optimizes workouts by analyzing and evaluating the movements performed
  • The XBody Newave EMS-Gerät, by Bodyficient GmbH, which maximizes XBody EMS (electrical muscular stimulation) training by using novel EMS electrodes that are arranged to address the unique needs of each customer.

The awards were presented during FIBO, which was held at the Koelnmesse Exhibition Centre in Cologne, Germany, in cooperation with Cologne-based TÜV Rheinland, an independent provider of technical services for testing, inspection, certification, consultation, and training.

BILT by Agassi and Reyes garners innovation award at FIBO

For any fledgling business it is important to be recognized by industry leaders and respected organizations. The two men whose names are on BILT by Agassi and Reyes products - Professional Tennis Hall of Fame member Andre Agassi and his trainer Gil Reyes - know that name recognition alone will not keep them in the fitness industry game for long.

The company, which began in 2012, just gained even more respectability last week when it took home the 2013 FIBO Innovation Award at FIBO in Cologne, Germany, for its Change of Direction (C.O.D.) machine. It was recognized for its design and safety.

The Award Jury was impressed with the ergonomically correct movements during workouts.

"The nomination was exciting, the award motivates us to move on our chosen path," said Agassi. “There are a number of different machines that target the individual elements, but no device is similar to the C.O.D. in its ability to do it all.”

FIBO, like IHRSA, keeps on growing

Ego Wellness of Lucca, Italy, visits the IHRSA booth at FIBO.Two years ago FIBO, Europe's largest trade show for fitness, wellness and health, broke its attendance record with 58,000 visitors. Not too shabby, huh?

Well, last week the event in Cologne, Germany, missed cracking the 100,000 mark by 3,300 people. That is a 30% increase from last year's 76,200.

With 670 companies from 30 countries covering more than 100,000 square feet, there is everything you ever wanted to inquire about, and then some, under one roof.

Among the trade show booths was IHRSA, with Hans Muench, director of IHRSA Europe, and Alison O'Kane Giannaras, association vice president of International Operations, manning the space.
