D.C. council moves forward with wellness tax

The council opened up debate on the issue following the introduction of an amendment by Councilmember David Catania, who spoke of a need to “expand fitness services to every part [of D.C.]” and called taxing wellness “penny-wise and pound-foolish.” Despite the amendment receiving vocal support from other members, the council decided to continue with its plan to tax wellness in the district on a 9-4 vote.

The four council members who opposed the plan to tax fitness services were Muriel Bowser, David Catania, Jack Evans and Jim Graham. Councilmember Evans mentioned having been swayed by the outpouring against the tax from the fitness industry, saying that he had received “four- to five thousand emails” asking him to oppose the tax.

The council is expected to pass the budget proposal - with the tax on fitness services - within the next few hours.
