Step Ahead Fitness to expand via franchising

Step Ahead Fitness, a Colombian chain of functional training centers owned by brothers Andrés and Alberto Gaitán, is preparing to expand, via franchising, into new markets in Latin America and the U.S.

The company currently has 13 sites in the cities of Bogotá, Cali, Chia, and Cartagena, which range in size from 1,076 to 2,152 square feet. The facilities provide personalized training services in a family atmosphere, limiting sessions to a maximum of four members per coach. Memberships cost $100 to $325 a month.

The Gaitán brothers lived in the U.S. for six years, and, during that time, they studied with Juan Carlos Santana, the founder of the Institute of Human Performance, in Boca Raton, Fla. In 2006, they introduced functional training to Colombia, opening the first Step Ahead Fitness facility.

Today, the company is researching new locations in Bogotá and, short-term, plans to expand in other Colombian cities such as Medellin, Barranquilla, and Bucaramanga. It also is studying the possibility of opening units in Argentina, Peru, Panama, Mexico, and the U.S.
