5 Ways Your Health Club Benefits from Community Outreach

Community outreach programs—those that offer important club resources to the community outside the constructs of membership—can help your club in a number of ways.

1. Show Your Club Cares about the Community

Asking local community members what they want out of a health club’s program offerings is a proven way to demonstrate a club’s ability to listen to member suggestions and personally address them as best as possible.

2. Differentiate Your Club from the Competition

In today’s ever-expanding market, most clubs offer some variation of yoga classes, personal training sessions, and group-X programs. However, programming specifically tailored to address a certain need—whether it is helping cancer patients regain their strength or sponsoring a road race to raise charitable funds for ALS—generates unique interest and helps a facility to stand out in a sea of similarity.

3. Give Staff a Sense of Purpose

Participants are not the only ones who benefit from involvement in community programs. When employees routinely see they are making a difference in the lives of others, they feel more fulfilled by the daily work they perform.

4. Keep Members Coming Back for More

Engaging community members in these tailored programs leads to an increase in member retention. Because of these offerings, community members are able to address their specific problems, while building lasting friendships with those who share similar interests or are looking to achieve the same goals. This targeted program strategy, when combined with peer motivation and encouragement, keeps participants focused on meeting and exceeding wellness objectives.

5. Attract New Members and Local Media

Engaging the media and involving your local community in Get Active America!—an IHRSA trademarked initiative—will get your programs noticed. Aligning your club’s programming with a nationally recognized brand can increase foot traffic, bring in new prospects and result in new memberships.

The most important thing to remember about health promotion programs like Get Active America! is that you get out of them what you put in. A club that simply hangs a few flyers won’t have the same degree of success as one that hangs flyers, maximizes their use of social media, sends out updates in emails or newsletters, calls members, and networks with local media and health professionals to promote the club.
