Urging Congress for Bill to Combat Obesity

Last week, public health experts gathered at a panel in Washington, D.C., to speak to the rising cost of obesity among America’s elderly population. Among those in attendance was IHRSA lobbyist, Jay Sweeney. During the meeting lawmakers, including Rep. Erik Paulsen (RN-MN) and Sen. Thomas Carper (D-DE), announced plans to introduce the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, which would require Medicare to reimburse physicians and hospitals for pharmaceuticals and medical procedures that aid in combating obesity.

According to Rep. Paulsen and Sen. Carper, a staggering one in four seniors suffers from obesity and its related illnesses. They also agreed that the healthcare savings gained by improving the health of elderly individuals would more than offset the cost of implementing such a bill.

IHRSA fully supports this proposition to promote active lifestyles and prevent the development of chronic diseases, and will continue to keep you informed of any updates as they develop.
