IHRSA Legislative Alert for Massachusetts Clubs

Last week, Massachusetts lawmakers reviewed numerous bills that could impact health clubs in the state.

Bills under consideration include:

  • House Bill 1311 (HB 1311) - which would expand on the mandate that health clubs acquire and maintain an AED, by requiring that it be housed in a secure and easily accessible location that is well-marked and located near a line of communication.
  • House Bill 185 (HB 185) – which would require Massachusetts personal trainers to have
    • A current certification by a national independent organization accredited by the NCCA or
    • A credential or certification in either the field of personal training, exercise science, or a similar field, from an educational institution accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or the United States Department of Education.

Additionally, IHRSA is continuing to monitor legislation that would apply Massachusetts’ civil protections for transgender individuals to health club locker rooms.
