IHRSA 2015: The Thrill of Anticipation

The 2015 event, which will take place March 11–14, in Los Angeles, features one of the strongest lineups of keynote speakers IHRSA has ever fielded. One of my favorites is Magnus Lindkvist, one of the most influential people in the rather exclusive world of trendspotting.

Magnus is a scientist with experience in the theater, a background that’s yielded a unique style—one that combines data, drama, comedy, and storytelling. In 2008, he created the world’s first accredited course in, “Trendspotting and Future Thinking,” at the Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship in Sweden. In 2013, he was the keynote speaker at the IHRSA European Congress in Madrid, where he received a standing ovation.

When I saw him there, I immediately initiated the process of booking him for IHRSA 2015.

He’ll be discussing “Thinking about the Future in an Uncertain World” on March 12th. His presentation is sponsored by Technogym.

Our other keynoters are equally appealing and revealing. You won’t want to miss Arianna Huffington, the founder of the Huffington Post (“Redefining Success: The Third Metric That Can Benefit Your Bottom Line,” March 11, sponsored by SPRI); Adam Bryant, The New York Times columnist (“Quick and Nimble: Lessons from Leading CEOs on How to Create a Culture of Innovation,” March 13, Matrix Fitness); and Stanford University’s Kelly McGonigal (“The Willpower Instinct,” March 14, MYZONE).

IHRSA ’15 will mark the debut of a special track on health promotion and medical well- ness, with sessions on topics such as children’s programming, corporate wellness, healthcare partnerships, wellness programming with limited resources, and medical wellness for cancer patients and survivors. There will also be a roundtable on nutritional programming and a tutorial on starting medical fitness programs in your club.

Many convention attendees are looking forward to the educational track on technology and social media. After last year’s presentation by social media guru Gary Vaynerchuk, many operators requested that we provide more practical, hands-on, and industry-specific information on this critical subject. This year’s session will pick up where Vaynerchuk left off.

An essential, virtually perpetual, convention attraction is the Annual IHRSA Financial Panel. This, the 19th installment, will consider the question, “Is the Health Club Industry Winning in the Financial World ... and Is It Sustainable?” Rick Caro, the creator of the panel, and president of Management Vision, Inc., an industry consultancy based in New York City, will moderate the proceedings.

If you attend this session, you’ll gain a different perspective from each of the highly respected financial executives on the panel. They’ll discuss the industry’s strengths and weaknesses, future trends, how the health and fitness sector compares to analogous industries, the state of different market segments, and how the debt and equity markets currently view our industry.

This is one session you won’t want to miss!

Believe me, these are just a few of the many, many reasons for you to attend the IHRSA convention and trade show this year.

The offerings are incredibly diverse, but all of the events have one thing in common: They’re designed to help you hone your competitive edge, making your business the best it can possibly be.

I look forward to reconnecting with you in L.A.!
