DC Mayor Vetoes FY15 Budget That Included Health Club Sales Tax

Today, DC Mayor Vincent Gray vetoed the fiscal year 2015 budget, which among other things would have expanded the 5.75% sales tax to health club services, including membership, personal training, and spa services.

In his letter to the council explaning the veto, Mayor Gray listed three line item vetoes, including the wellness tax. “I cannot, in good conscience, sign a budget that hurts seniors, taxes wellness, dramatically delays and drives up the cost of the D.C. Streetcar system, and ties the hands of future Mayors to respond to fiscal problems,” said Gray.

The mayor has asked the council to postpone their summer recess by 30 days to craft a new spending bill that addresses these issues.

An override vote is scheduled for Monday. Only 9 votes are needed to override the Mayor's veto.
