IHRSA 2014 Legal & Legislative track: scams and cyber crime

Garrett Felix had been contemplating when to do an IHRSA educational session on scams and cyber crime for both the fitness industry and members of clubs. Then the cosmos practically begged him to do it.

This past summer Felix, Information Security & Privacy officer in the Legal Department at MediFit, was touring prospective gyms for himself. During a visit on a guest pass he logged onto the Wifi that was available for members and guests. Soon after that initial visit he started to get notices on the device he used that he was potentially getting scammed.

What he discovered was that the club’s computer was also on the Wifi, so in addition to being open to other members and guests devices he was also subject to any malware (malicious software) or viruses from the club’s computer. He said he would be extremely nervous and concerned if that club had his credit card information for payments and it was unprotected.

Felix will present, There’s an App for That … But There is a Scam for That, Too; Protecting Your Club from Becoming a Victim of Scams & Cyber Crime, at the IHRSA 33RD Annual International Convention & Trade Show in San Diego, on Wednesday, March 12, at 3:45 p.m., in thr Legal & Legislative educational session track.

IHRSA is featuring a different track from now until IHRSA 2014, running on Tuesdays and Thursdays. One session will be highlighted with all of the other sessions from that track listed.
