Blue Cross program to cover childhood obesity prevention

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City is taking the bull by the horns in the childhood obesity epidemic with a new pilot program. The three-year effort will be free, after deductibles and co-pays, and helps youth lose weight and develop better eating habits.

First Lady Michelle Obama has been pushing for healthier eating by children at the same time a national effort is ongoing for prevention that will reduce medical costs. With care for an obese child three times as high as a non-obese child, and 1 in 3 children (according to 2010 numbers) in the U.S. overweight, the effort could save the country millions of dollars.

Parents may not address the issues because they are in denial or aren't informed.
