Dieticians do more than suggest healthy food

This week's question asks what a registered dietician does for a fitness club.

Taylor Larson from The Houstonian Hotel explains the many positives in Best Practices.

Q: "Why is a registered dietician necessary to have in a health club?  What are the pros and cons of having one on staff?"

A: Dietitians are an invaluable resource for health clubs as they offer something no other health or fitness professional can. It is best stated by The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that ‘Registered dietitians, or RDs, are the food and nutrition experts, translating the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. The expertise, training and credentials that back a registered dietitian are vital for promoting positive lifestyle choices.’ Within health clubs, there is an ever so captive audience of members wanting to better their quality of life, on some level. Diet is the major component of making this happen and with an RD on staff you have satisfied members returning to their friends and family telling of the improvements they have experienced in their health or performance. Dietitian in health clubs can offer more than one-on-one nutrition counseling, but also grocery store tours, in-home cooking lessons and kitchen assessments, all of which add to an attractive list of benefits for a health club.
